Major depression is one of the most common psychologic conditions worldwide. The symptoms of major depression include: depressed mood, anhedonia, changes to eating habits, weight, sleep, energy level and concentration. Today, let us find out more the symptoms of anhedonia, which speaks to the lack of enjoyment in life.
Besides a depressed mood, another hallmark symptom of major depressive disorder is anhedonia. Anhedonia is a loss in the interest of activities or hobbies that used to bring someone joy. For example, someone with anhedonia would no longer have an interest gardening, volunteering or playing card games when these sorts of activities brought them a sense of pleasure and joy in the past. Those with anhedonia may lose their “drive” and “don’t care” any longer. Those with anhedonia, if is a complete lack in the interest or pleasure in most activities of life. They tend to isolate themselves and avoid social activities. (1) In order to reach a diagnosis of major depressive disorder, a depressed mood or anhedonia must be present.
If you are dealing with anhedonia, it is essential to challenge yourself to communicate and socialize with others. Despite how you feel or your desire to do so, take a walk each morning, take yourself out to dinner and watch a sunrise. Push past anhedonia and enjoy the beauty in the simple wonders around you. Remember the words in Psalm 118:24, “This is the day the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it.” All of your days are will be filled with joy and gladness. Even in the darkness days of our lives, there is a place in God where we have rest and joy. You will find it! As a matter, you are already there and may not know it.
