Worthlessness and Guilt

by Jamal Ross

Depression can have far reaching effects, stretching across genders and all age groups. A depressed mood and lack in the interest in most, if not all, activities of daily life are hallmark symptoms of depression. Another well symptom of depression is feelings of guilt and worthlessness. Let’s us find about more about this symptom of depression and how the word of God can lead us to feelings of value and confidence.

The DSM 5 describes feelings of worthlessness and guilt as symptoms of depression. (1) Feelings of worthlessness can permeate our thoughts as we think of past failures and delayed successes. Those who have feelings of worthlessness can perceive themselves as inferior to others. Comparison to other successful individuals comes into the picture and fuels a sense of inadequacy. Minor setbacks are magnified. We take on guilt. Somehow, we may feel punished or condemned for a sin of our past. Remember, if anyone be in Christ, he is a new creation and the old has passed away (2 Corinthians 5:17). You are more valuable than you realize. Your value is so great that Jesus died for you. And there is no need to have any guilt, Jesus took all of you sins upon Himself to make you new again. This is the truth. And this is what you must believe.

When we process our perceptions through an engine of human reasoning fuel by discouragement, our feelings toward our present circumstance are far from reality. We begin to operate in extremes and believe no one else has experienced our level our hurt or abandonment. The bible tells us that “no temptation that has overtaken you except such as is common to man” and that God will “make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it” (1 Corinthians 10:13) Therefore, we are able to bear our difficulties knowing that God provides a way to escape from our depression with belief in His word and promise for our future.
